A Taste of Town - Visit the Yellowknife's Farmers Market

Yellowknife may be known for its subarctic winters and famous winter festivals, but when summer arrives, the city bursts with life — especially when it comes to locally grown food. Despite its winter chill, Yellowknife’s short but intense summer season brings with it a rich harvest.

In 2013, a group of local food advocates set out to showcase just how much could grow during these sunny months. Together, they founded the Yellowknife Farmers Market, turning skeptics into believers. Today, it’s a beloved summer tradition where gardeners, growers, artists, and food lovers gather to share their produce and creations. From fresh flowers to zucchinis as big as your arm, this market is a celebration of northern abundance.

More Than Just a Market

Every Tuesday, from June to September, the market springs to life from 5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Somba K’e Civic Plaza, right in the heart of downtown. With Frame Lake as a backdrop, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy fresh food, local music, and the vibrant, community atmosphere that defines Yellowknife summers.

Bringing the family? The nearby JumpStart playground is always  bustling with happy children, while parents chat and mingle, creating a relaxed, welcoming vibe. It’s a great way to let the little ones burn off energy while you connect with the local community.

Whether you’re enjoying your meal quietly at a picnic table or dancing by the lake to the tunes of local musicians, the Yellowknife Farmers Market offers more than just food — it’s an experience. Chat with friendly vendors, discover unique local crafts, and connect with the diverse community that makes Yellowknife so special.

Supporting Local Growers and Artisans

At the heart of the market is a commitment to community and sustainability. The Yellowknife Farmers Market society even hosts a table for local gardeners to sell their extra produce, ensuring nothing goes to waste. As you stroll through the market, you’ll find a variety of homemade crafts, artwork, and unique merchandise that reflect the creativity and passion of Yellowknife’s residents.

So whether you’re grabbing farm-fresh veggies, picking up a one-of-a-kind craft, or simply soaking in the summer vibe by the lake, the Yellowknife Farmers Market is a must-visit. It’s a celebration of local flavors, talent, and the vibrant spirit of the North.
