OUTDOOR WINTER/SPRING ADVENTURES

Snow, glorious snow! It covers the ground from November until April. It's cut into blocks to build our snow castle. It's the main ingredient for many of our outdoor winter activities.

While Aurora viewing is one of our main outdoor attractions from December to April, it only happens after dark. During the day there's dogsledding to snowmobiling, skiing to snowshoeing, and dozens of ways to keep warm in the unspoiled, uncrowded Yellowknife area.

Imagine whizzing along a trail behind a happy team of huskies. Imagine snowmobiling across awesome landscapes. Imagine learning how to fish through the ice on a nearby lake. Then imagine gliding along on skis on a gentle trail, soaking up the silence of the Boreal Forest, watching for fat ptarmigan or a lone fox. Or imagine skating on an outdoor rink right next to City Hall and chatting with the locals who lace up for a noon-hour twirl.

Winter tours will also keep you outdoors.  As the weather warms up a bit, try a "fat" bike tour on a local trail, or venture out onto a wide-open ice road that connects Yellowknife to the village of Dettah. When the April breezes blow in, take a lesson in kite skiing or just head down to photograph the fliers as they soar over the frozen water of Great Slave Lake.

No reason to stay indoors when visiting Yellowknife in winter or spring. Just bundle up and head for the action. Many tour operators provide suitable outdoor wear including parkas, warm up pants, mitts, touques and boots. All rated for minus 30 °C or colder.

Check out our winter outdoor adventure operators for your ideal winter experience.
