Hit the Trails!

Yellowknife and the surrounding area has lots of beautiful nature and hikes - get out there and soak them in!

Yellowknife’s trails are perfect for nature lovers and adventurers. Pack some snacks, bring water, and lace up your hiking boots for these spectacular routes:

  • McMahon Frame Lake Trail (5 km) A partially paved loop around Frame Lake, offering views of city landmarks. Sturdy footwear is recommended for rocky areas.
  • Tin Can Hill A designated 'off leash' area for dog walkers, the Tin Can Hill provides a wonderful greenspace within the City of Yellowknife. Old treasures may still be found by exploring the old trails.
  • Prospector's Heritage Trail (5.3 km) Located in Fred Henne Territorial Park, this scenic route provides lakeside views and is suitable for most skill levels.
  • Niven Lake Trail (2 km) A short and easy route popular for walking and running. Open year-round and dog-friendly (on-leash).
  • Range Lake Trail (1 km) The starting point for the Range Lake trail is behind the Shell convenience store. Not as long as other hikes, but the scenery is worth it!
  • Frame Lake Trail (5 km)The Frame Lake Trail is an extended network of well maintained paved and graveled walkways and bike routes that circles the scenic lake, connecting downtown Yellowknife with the residential and commercial areas to the west.
  • Cameron Falls Trail (2 km) A picturesque hike to the falls, where you can enjoy the roar of spring meltwaters or the beauty of fall colours.
  • Ranney Hill Trail (2.6 km) An easy loop trail perfect for a quiet hike with stunning views, best visited from April to October.
  • Big Hill Lake (6 km) Big Hill Lake is accessible by driving down the Ingraham Trail to Madeline Lake (25 kilometers east), with access and parking available on a rough pull out on the south side of the highway. The 6-kilometre round-trip hiking trail is well marked in the summer months only. Please contact Visitor Centre staff for more information on access.

Yellowknife’s parks showcase the breathtaking beauty of the North. From sandy beaches to fishing havens, there’s something for everyone:

  • Fred Henne Territorial Park A perfect summer spot for swimming, picnicking, and family fun with facilities like playgrounds, a boat launch, and fire pits.
  • Yellowknife River Territorial Park Enjoy fishing, picnicking, and the floating dock. A favourite spot for locals along the Yellowknife River.
  • Madeline Lake Territorial Park Known for its calm waters, this park offers a serene swimming experience in summer, plus picnic tables and fire pits.
  • Pontoon Lake Territorial Park A fishing paradise for Northern Pike and Lake Trout with extensive hiking trails and picnic facilities.
  • Prelude Lake Territorial Park Explore two trails: the easy Panoramic Trail with lookout views, or the Prelude Nature Trail through diverse terrain. More about the parks.
  • Reid Lake Territorial Park Get away from it all at Reid Lake campground, a popular family camping destination amongst locals and the last campground on the Ingraham Trail (NWT Highway 4), just 60 km outside of the territorial capital of Yellowknife.

  • Check the weather and dress accordingly.
  • Remember you're in bear country - make sure you check any local advisories and carry bear spray, if needed.
  • Bring water or hot fluids for hydration.
  • Take breaks to enjoy the views and recharge.
  • Let someone know your plans before you set out.
